- In a little girl’s bedroom, light shades of pink compliment a brown carpet, including comforters, area rugs and stenciled walls with ballet slippers and princess crowns. For a bolder look, match purple and black zebra striped walls with the room’s black carpet. Use a light shade of blue against black or brown carpet for a little boy’s room. Highlight the blue by using a nautical theme, such as painted waves on the walls or tiny blue ships lining the room’s book shelves.
- Muted colors for a living room, such as white or cream, won't overwhelm the brown or black carpet. Use off-white sofas, rugs, frames and vases for an added touch of sophistication. Fill the room with fresh flowers for subtle pops of color, like red, yellow or orange. Change out the flowers seasonally with such selections as poinsettias, sunflowers and tulips.
- Try an earth tone approach for the master bedroom. Complement the room’s brown or black carpet with green-colored walls, using shades similar to asparagus or pistachio. Offset wooden side tables with green lamps or black or brown lamps with green shades. Designers looking for a more subtle approach may choose an off-white comforter, topping the bed with green pillows and throw blankets. Tie off a set of cream-colored curtains with green strips of fabric.
- Using dark colors in a home office, study or library adds a stately feel to the room. Pick from such colors as maroon, forest green or burnt sienna. Fill bookshelves with similarly colored knickknacks, like small statues and bookends. For an added touch, use brass accents throughout the room, including clocks, name plates, frames, pen sets, paperweights, door knobs and drawer handles on hardwood desks.
