Greyhound bus lines operates out of 2,300 destinations and make over 13,000 daily departures in North America. Often, Greyhound is more affordable than air or train travel, or it is the only means of public transportation in certain geographic regions. The bus line has several luggage rules and regulations for passengers regarding the size, weight, and amount of baggage allowed. - Passengers on Greyhound buses are limited to one checked bag of no more than 50 pounds per passenger and one carry-on bag of no more than 25 pounds. A second bag will incur a fee of $10, as of 2010. Any baggage beyond this will be charged a fee based on Greyhound Package Express rates.
Carry-on baggage must fit into the overhead compartment or underneath the seat in front of you. Checked baggage in excess of 50 pounds or 63 inches in total dimension will incur a charge of $30 to $40, depending on the distance traveled.
Acceptable checked baggage includes suitcases, duffel bags and trunks; a plastic or paper bag is not acceptable. - Items that may not be carried within checked or carry-on baggage include animals, corpses, explosive materials, disabling chemicals, some flammable items and all guns and firearms. Items such as money, prescription medication and laptops may not be in checked baggage and must be taken in the passenger's carry-on bag or on the passenger himself. As with airlines, some items are prohibited as carry-on items but may be brought in checked baggage. These include corkscrews, scissors, glass bottles and containers, sporting goods, tools and metal cutlery.
- Greyhound's maximum liability for checked baggage is capped at $250 for all bags checked per adult ticket and $125 per child's ticket. The company does not accept any liability for unchecked, carry-on baggage or for oversized and excess baggage. In order to receive funds for lost baggage, passengers must complete and file a claim for lost or damaged baggage. Passengers may opt to insure baggage beyond $250 for an additional fee, up to a maximum of $1,000 per passenger ticket.
