How to Mount Solar Filter Film

    • 1). Cut multiple strips of cardboard, each 2 inches wide. Wrap one strip around the outer edge of the telescope's housing for the objective lens. Glue the cardboard ends together. Wrap another strip of cardboard around the first cardboard ring. Glue the two ends together. Continue wrapping and gluing these strips in this manner until the rings form a cylinder 5 mm thick.

    • 2). Place the cylinder on top of an uncut piece of cardboard. Trace the outer and inner circumference of the cylinder onto the piece of cardboard. Cut the cardboard to form a flat ring. Repeat with a second piece of cardboard.

    • 3). Lay the two rings flat on a table top. Position pieces of double sided tape around the circumference of one side of each ring.

    • 4). Tape a large area of bathroom tissue down on the table. Be sure the tissue is free of wrinkles and large enough to cover the outer circumference of the cylinder.

    • 5). Lay the cylinder flat on top of the solar filter film. Cut around the cylinder's circumference using an X-Acto knife.

    • 6). Position the film on top of the tissue paper. Take care not to wrinkle the film.

    • 7). Lower one of the rings on top of the film, placing the film in contact with the double-sided tape. Press down to achieve a firm grip. Turn over and place the second ring on top of the film. Press the double-sided tape onto the film, achieving another firm grip.

    • 8). Glue the rings protecting the film on top of one side of the cylinder.

    • 9). Slide the solar filter film mount over the objective end of the telescope or camera before viewing a solar event.
