- The handle of a fishing net may be made of aluminum, fiberglass composite or wood. These materials are durable and can easily support the weight of the fish.
- Most of the typical fishing nets that anglers employ have a teardrop shape at the scooping portion of the net; this is usually made of the same materials as the handle.
- Nylon that lacks a protective coating may make up the mesh part of a fishing net. While nets of this type work to secure a fish that an angler has brought to the boat or to the shore, material with this texture can scrape scales from the fish and/or strip away the layer of protective slime from the creature.
- Catch-and-release enthusiasts prefer to use fishing nets that have rubber mesh or coated nylon mesh. These nets have a smoother quality to them and are much less apt to injure a fish, allowing the person to let it go unharmed.
- These coated nets are more expensive but they are less prone to develop tangles when netting the fish and are less likely to be damaged by fishing hooks digging into them.
