- The cornice should be long enough to fit across the window and deep enough to cover the window treatment fixtures. These dimensions should take into account any drapery hardware, such as controls for shades or pull poles for curtains, which the cornice goes over and around.
- Four sections of wood, plywood or Styrofoam form the cornice. The dimensions of the front section are the length and height of the cornice, the top section is the length and depth and the side sections are each the height and depth of the cornice. These measurements give both the size of each piece and the square footage of material needed.
- To cover the cornice with fabric, add two inches to each of the cornice measurements to allow for wrapping the fabric behind the wood. If the cornice has padding or batting, then add additional inches to compensate for the thickness of the padding. Cornices with gathered fabrics use double the amount of fabric.
