It is sometimes hard to get kids to be independent in school.
In fact, there are children who would sometimes cry during the first day in school.
Kids can actually become independent if they are taught independence at home and are trained properly.

At home, before your child would begin formal schooling, you must orient him about school and show him the wonders of being in one.
You can try to let him watch some movies that involve a classroom setting with children enjoying the company of their teacher.
Do not show him a setting where children are being scolded by their teacher or else he would have this scary concept of what a school is.
Tell him about the joys of being in school, of meeting friends and of playing with other children at the playground.
Before actually starting school, prepare everything that he might need so he would have the confidence that everything he needs is just within his reach.
Choose items that show the characters he loves.
This would further make him feel secure.
During the first day of school, do not make such a fuss about it.
Your kid must see that you are also confident and that you trust him to be in school.
Just say goodbye casually with a self-assuring smile and you will soon hear a lot of stories from him when the school ends.
If he does not cry when you said goodbye, he is on the right track.
When your kid tells you stories about his school, listen attentively and praise him for everything that he did in school.
Try to review him of his lessons or you could teach him in advance.
This way, when he enters school the following day, he would have that self-confidence which is very important to foster his independence in school.
Have your kid bring his own snacks at school and as much as possible, if he understands his lessons, then let him study with only a little supervision from you.
If he doesn't know his homework, then that would be the time for you to intervene.
But still make sure that you only supervise, and not answer his entire assignment.
By doing all these things, you will eventually notice your child having an easier time in school and without having to constantly solicit the help of his teacher due to his new found independence.
