It"s Never Too Hot for Golf
On the previous page, I introduced you to some of the premier (and expensive) Arizona golf courses, some of which are nationally acknowledged as top courses. Although there are many courses outside the greater Phoenix area, if you had to name one area as being the premier Arizona golf destination, it would have to be the golf courses of Scottsdale. After those, in the mid-priced and lower priced ranges, you can still find some great Arizona golf courses all around town.
Looking for a discount? If you pay in advance (nonrefundable) you might find a great deal on one of these courses at GolfNow.com (Buy Direct).
In the East Valley, Las Sendas, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., is a very popular golf course. Winter rates go up to $150, but in the summer you can play Las Sendas for between $40 and $80. It is a high desert course and the greens are large and undulating.
At the Wigwam Golf Club in the West Valley you will find three courses. Gold, Patriot (formerly Blue) and Heritage (formerly Red). The Gold ("The Monster") is the premier award-winning course, so try to get on that one. Regularly about $130 to play, in the summer you can play starting at $40. In 2015 The Wigwam is commemorating a special anniversary. To celebrate, every Thursday through Labor Day 2015, Wigwam Golf will feature special greens fee rates of $19.65 to celebrate 1965, the opening year of its Gold and Patriot courses. Wigwam golf employees will dress in 1960’s themed golf apparel to celebrate 50 years of Gold and Patriot golf – you are invited to do the same!
Designed by Ben Crenshaw, Talking Stick is owned and operated by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The North Course made the top 100 in Golf Magazine. In the summer $30 - $75 will buy you a round, compared with $175 in the winter.
Associated with the legendary resort, The Arizona Biltmore has two golf courses: the traditional Adobe course and the newer links course. In high season, expect to pay up to $185 to play, but in the summer you can tee off starting at $30. Check out the 18-hole putting course just for fun.
Gold Canyon Golf Resort in the East Valley has two well-rated courses, the premier being Dinosaur Mountain. In the winter it will cost you up to $200 to play, but in the summer Dinosaur Mountain will cost between $50 and $60 and the Sidewinder Course will cost only $35 to $50.
In Chandler you should visit Ocotillo, especially if you enjoy playing around lots of water. You can get rates starting at $30 in the summer compared with $130 in the winter. There are 27 holes, 24 of which have water and there are 112 bunkers. Blue/Gold is the most challenging combination. Bring two or three extra sleeves of balls. Really.
At South Mountain in South Phoenix you will find Raven, an unusual course with over 6,000 pine trees. Over 7,000 yards long (if you choose to go that way), Raven will cost you up to $200 in prime season, but only between $66 and up in the summer.
Tired of desert courses? Then it's time to play ASU Karsten in Tempe. This links course charges up to $150 in the winter, $35 and up in the summer.
