DIY: Fishing Rod Storage

    • 1). Disassemble a sectional rod by pulling the sections apart at the joint where they slide together. Lay the sections together in a small bundle and take up any slack on the line by placing the hook on one of the line holder rings, and tightening the line slightly until it is taut. Wrap a bread tie or plastic tie around the rod sections to secure them together. For a single body rod, place the hook on the line holder ring and tighten to keep the hook secure.

    • 2). Buy a rod storage rack to fit the type of rods you have, either the sectional rods or single body. Keep in mind sectional rods can be stored in full extension without breaking them down if you own both types of rod and get a storage rack that holds single body rods. Attach the storage rack to the area you prefer to store your rods, in your garage, a shed, basement or other protected area. Attic storage is not recommended due to the extreme hot and cold conditions which will break down a rod. Place your rods in the rack.

    • 3). Attach cup hooks to the wall in the area you wish to store your rods, at lengths apart that will hold your rod evenly. If you have a single rod construction, about four feet apart is a good length. For bundled sectional rods, about a foot and a half is optimal. Hook the body of the fishing rod over the cup hook, effectively hanging it for storage until further use.

    • 4). Buy PVC pipe in a length that will cover your entire fishing rod and a diameter of at least 4 inches, and up to 6 inches for storage of more than one rod. This method is optimal for single body rod construction. Buy end caps for the PVC pipe in the corresponding size. Glue one end cap in place and let dry. Place the rods inside the PVC pipe and put the other end cap on the top without glue, to remove rods when ready for use. Store the PVC holder upright or on its side in a safe location. The rods can be transported in this holder as well.

    • 5). Place the fishing rods in a rod carrying case bought at a fishing supply store. Store the cases in a safe dry location as with the other methods. This is the professional method and is useful for expensive rods that need to be kept in excellent condition.
