- 1). Make sure you buy the right tie rods for your Chevy Corvette. The tie rods vary from model year to model year--you don't want to get stuck with parts you can't use.
- 2). Use a lug nut to loosen the lug nuts on the wheels, but do not remove them. Jack the car up, and when you have it safely secured on jack stands, then remove the wheels.
- 3). Take off the rack and pinion boot, and use a wrench loosen tool to remove the shock dampener from the end of the inner tie rod. Slide the dampener back onto the steering rack to allow you access to the tie rod.
- 4). Slip a wrench over the inner tie rod housing, and unscrew the tie rod, keeping track of the number of turns it takes to do so. Make sure you write this number down.
- 5). Remove any Locktite tape from the threads of the tie rod.
- 1). Clean the threads of the new tie rod to make sure you have a good surface for the new Locktite tape to stick, then add the new tape.
- 2). Screw the new tie rod into the rack the same number of turns it took to remove it. Use a torque wrench to tighten it to 74 foot pounds.
- 3). Slide the shock dampener down so it covers the housing of the inner tie rod, and replace the rack and pinion boot.
- 4). Repeat Sections One and Two for the other tie rod, then reinstall the tires. Tighten the lug nuts to 100 foot pounds, then get your Corvette aligned.
