How to Change Neon Rear Brakes

    Removing Old Parts

    • 1). Park the car in a safe area, with enough space for you to move around it.

    • 2). Loosen the lug nuts on your rear tires, using a lug wrench.Lift the back tires approximately two inches above the ground with a jack. Secure jack stands under your rear axles for support, and place tire blocks behind the front wheels.

    • 3). Remove the lug nuts completely, followed by the rear tires.

    • 4). Remove the rear brake caliper, by loosening the caliper mount bolts with a wrench and ratchet, turning the bolts counterclockwise.

    • 5). Lift the brake caliper gently from the caliper mount, and suspend it with a bungee cord, above the rear brake assembly, and remove the old brake pads.

    • 6). Loosen the rear brake caliper mounting bolts, using a socket wrench, and remove the bolts. Take off the caliper mount from the vehicle.

    • 7). Take off the retaining screw from the disc mounting the hole, and gently tap the rotor to rid any rust that may have accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. You can use a brake-parts cleaner and a wire brush to clean the wheel hub before installing the new rotor.

    Installing Brakes

    • 1). Put the new rotor on the wheel hub, pushing it completely through the hole. Put back the rotor retainer screw.

    • 2). Place the caliper mounting bolts back. Tighten them with a wrench.

    • 3). Put the new brake pads into slots in the caliper bracket. Brake grease must be applied to the back of the new brake pads before installation.

    • 4). Squeeze the piston into the side of the caliper, using a C-clamp placed over the rear caliper and the piston extending from the inside of the caliper. The clamp can be removed when the piston is fully hidden within the caliper.

    • 5). Put the brake caliper back, using a socket and ratchet. Put the wheel back, and repeat the process to change the brakes on the other wheel.
