Trout fishing is one of the more popular ways to enjoy the wildlife of Arkansas. Your trout fishing experience will be more enjoyable if you know the regulations that govern trout fishing in Arkansas. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission sets forth the rules and regulations for all game and fishing activities in the state. - Arkansas sets limits on the amount of fish an angler can catch in a day. Four types of trout are found in Arkansas: brook, brown, cutthroat and rainbow. For any species of trout, the limit is five per day. For all fish, no matter the species, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission sets a limit is 75 per day. These limits are in effect from midnight to midnight.
- Anglers are asked to catch and release any fish designated for such. When a fish is released, it must be into the same water where it was caught.
- Arkansas bans the cleaning of fish where the fish was caught. For instance, if the fish was caught on a boat, the angler is prohibited from cleaning the fish there.
- Anglers are not permitted to fish within 100 yards downstream from dams for safety reasons. The two most commonly enforced areas for this law are the Barling and North Little Rock Hydroelectric plants.
- Arkansas, Missouri and Mississippi have reciprocal agreements concerning fishing licenses. You must have a fishing license to fish in Arkansas. If you are fishing for trout, you must get a trout permit separate from the general license.
