- 1). Print a pumpkin carving pattern that resembles Jack Skellington's face. The Jack Skellington patterns have large round eyes, teardrop shaped nostrils for a nose and a mouth that resembles a thin line that has been sewn shut. There are a number of commercial Jack Skellington patterns for purchase from Halloween and department stores. Or you can find patterns on pumpkin carving websites.
- 2). Cut a circular hole in the top of the pumpkin that is centered on the stub left by the pumpkin vine. Lift the circular pumpkin rind away from the pumpkin. Scoop out the seeds and pulp from the center of the pumpkin using the pumpkin scoop.
- 3). Trim excess paper away from your pattern and tape it over the front of your pumpkin.
- 4). Poke holes around the edges of your pattern with a pumpkin carving pick to outline the design on your pumpkin. Each hole should be spaced 1/8-inch apart.
- 5). Pull the paper away from the pumpkin. Begin to cut the design into the pumpkin using the pumpkin carving saws. Begin in the center of the design and work outward. This will take the pressure off the pumpkin and will help to avoid breakage.
- 6). Push pieces of pumpkin out from the inside of the gourd.
- 7). Place a pumpkin light inside the pumpkin so that it can be displayed.
