- 1). Wash the wool fabric and lay it flat to dry.
- 2). Measure the circumference of your shoulders and multiply the measurement by 1.3. Measure the distance from your neck to the length you would like the cape and add 2 inches.
- 3). Draw a rectangle on the wool according to the above measurements and cut out the shape.
- 4). Lay the fabric with the bottom edge in front of you. Draw curved shapes along the bottom right and left corners and cut out the curves to make rounded bottom corners.
- 5). Fold over 2 inches of fabric along the top of the cape. Sew the fold in place with a zigzag stitch near the rough fabric edge.
- 6). Cut a piece of thick satin cord or 1 1/2-inch-wide satin ribbon. Make the cord or ribbon twice the shoulder circumference and thread it through the fold at the top of the cake.
- 1). Try on the cape.
- 2). Make a mark just beneath the shoulders on the left and right side with chalk.
- 3). Make a 4-inch slit on the left and right side, starting at the marks on the wool and cutting downward.
- 4). Draw a slight curve on the right and left of each slit.
- 5). Cut out the curves. This is to widen the arm openings slightly to make it easier to put on the cape.
- 1). Measure the perimeter of the cape.
- 2). Cut a piece of 1-inch-wide satin, double-fold bias binding tape to the perimeter measurement, plus about 1/2-inch.
- 3). Slide the perimeter of the cape in between the fold of the tape and pin it in place.
- 4). Sew a running stitch or a decorative, top stitch all the way around the binding to attach it to the cape. Sew through all layers of the tape and the cape.
- 5). Overlap the 1/2-inch of extra tape and sew a running stitch to keep the ends secure.
