How to Reboot a Computer in Safe Mode

    • 1). Start the computer. When you see the flashing prompt in the upper right-hand corner, start pressing the F8 key at the top of your keyboard. Some computers only need to have the F8 key pressed once, but some will require you to keep pressing it until the prompt stops flashing.

    • 2). From the next page, select the action you would like to perform. You will see different selections, but you need to select "Safe Mode." Press the corresponding number; your computer will continue booting up. (Caution: The screen is going to look very different from what you are used to seeing, but that is because you are in safe mode. You also will not have all of the functions that accompany a normal boot.)

    • 3). If you are running a virus check, start the virus-protection software and let the scan take place. If you have to delete some drivers to reinstall when you boot up in normal mode, do it. Whatever action you have to take, perform it right away.

    • 4). When you are finished, go to the "Start" menu in the bottom left corner and click "Turn Off." When the action box pops up, select "Restart." Your computer will then reboot in normal running mode.
