- 1). Click "Start," then "All Programs," then "Accessories." Click "Paint" to launch Microsoft Paint, the image manipulation utility included with all factory configurations of the Windows operating system.
- 2). Click the "Paint" button within the "Paint" window. The button is blue and contains a white rectangle and a white triangle pointing down. Select "Open," then navigate to the image file that contains the color whose hex number you need. Click the file to select it, then click "Open." Paint will display the image in the main window.
- 3). Click the "Home" tab, then click on "Color Picker," which you can find in the "Tools" group. Click once on any area of the image that has the color you want. Click "Edit Colors," then "Define Custom Colors." Make a note of the three numbers under the "Red," "Green" and "Blue" (RGB) headings.
- 4). Convert the three RGB numbers to hexadecimal by clicking "Start," then "All Programs," then "Accessories." Click "Calculator." Click "View" on the "Calculator" window, then select "Scientific."
- 5). Enter the "Red" number from step 3 into the calculator, then select "Hex." Make a note of the hexadecimal number. Select "Dec."
- 6). Repeat the previous step for the "Green" and "Blue" numbers. The three hex numbers converted by the calculator are the hex number for the color you picked from the digital image.
