How to Transfer Data From One Computer to Another Using a Router

    • 1). Open the start menu on the computer that contains your files. Click "connect to." A window will appear showing the list of available networks. Select your network, and then click the connect button. You will be asked for the security key. Enter your pass phrase to be connected.

    • 2). Place the files you want to transfer in your public folder by selecting them and clicking the right-hand button on your computer mouse. Next, click "copy." Now browse to your public folder by clicking to the address bar and typing: X:\users\public. The X represents the drive letter in which you have installed your operating system in the public folder. Right click anywhere in the folder and click "paste." Your copied file will appear in the public folder.

    • 3). Go to your start menu. Click on "control panel." Click "network and Internet.. Open "the network and sharing center" menu. Click the button with an arrow on it (in the same line on which "public folder sharing" is written) to reveal more options. Click on the option "Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files." Then, click the "apply" option to make the settings effective.

    • 4). Turn on the computer to which you wish to transfer files. Open the start menu and click the"network" option. The icon for the computer that contains your files will appear in this folder. Click the icon to open it. This will bring you to the shared public folder for that computer. Click on the "public" folder. Select the files you need to transfer, and right-click your mouse. Click the "copy" option.

    • 5). Type (X :\) in your address bar in the same folder to access your drive X. Here X represents the name of the operating system drive. Right click anywhere in the drive, click on "paste." The transferred files should now appear on both computers.
