- 1). Restart your laptop. This helps clear the system cache and may resolve software-related freezing. On a Mac, click the apple-shaped icon in the top left-hand corner of the screen and select "Restart." On a Windows PC, click "Restart" from within the "Start" menu.
- 2). Check that your laptop's battery is fully charged. Low energy can reduce the power of the laptop's processor, causing some programs to freeze and potentially forcing your laptop to shut down. If the battery power is low, connect the laptop to a reliable power source.
- 3). Scan for a virus. Such malicious programs can cause data loss, freezing and a host of other computer maladies. Use a standard antivirus program from companies like Norton or McAfee to identify and remove potential virus programs.
- 4). Check for spyware and adware. These programs run in the background and track your laptop computer habits, causing potential system slowdowns and freezing. Run an anti-spyware and -adware program to check for these hidden programs.
- 5). Reduce the amount of programs running simultaneously on your computer. Too many programs running at once can overload your laptop's computer processor and cause system-wide glitches. Try quitting all open programs except for essentials, such as your antivirus software.
- 6). Upgrade your laptop's RAM. RAM is used for a variety of computer processing and storage functions and has a direct effect on system performance. Some laptops, especially budget models, are designed with the bare minimum and may freeze if you overtax the system.
