Mucus Mysteries Revealed - Checking Your Cervical Mucus to Pinpoint Ovulation

If you are trying to conceive you have probably already heard of one of the best fertility clues you can get: your cervical mucus (CM).
In case you haven't heard of it yet, don't worry.
I am going to explain what exactly your cervical mucus is, the best ways to get a sample, and how it can help you to pinpoint the most important event when trying to conceive...
your ovulation.
Have you ever had a close look at your underwear and noticed that sometimes it is really dry and at other times it is more sticky and wet? The culprit in this case is your cervical mucus, and it is well worth the effort to take a little note of its consistency every morning.
Now, the best way to get a little sample is to touch your vaginal opening when you are on the toilet.
In case you are noticing that it is mostly dry around there, it might be necessary to obtain a sample by inserting a finger into your vagina, but most of the time simply touching the opening or in fact wiping it with toilet paper will do the job.
For our fertility purposes, we are mostly interested in its consistency and color.
  • The first few days after your period ends there will be hardly any or no mucus at all.
This normally lasts for a few days.
  • Once this dry spell is over, you will probably notice that your cervical mucus becomes a bit stickier and it will generally stay like this for about two days.
  • For the next few days you will now notice that your CM has a creamy or milky, lotion-like consistency.
This is what we call creamy CM.
  • Right before ovulation, when your chances to become pregnant are the highest, you will notice egg white cervical mucus.
It is slippery, stretchy, clear in color, and looks a lot like egg white, hence its name.
You should definitely schedule in some babydancing (Sex) once you notice this type of CM.
  • After ovulation you will notice that your mucus dries up again and it will most probably stay like this until your period arrives.
