- 1). Install Internet Information Services. From the Windows desktop, click "Start," then "Control Panel," then "Programs," then "Turn Windows features on or off," and be sure the box next to Internet Information Services is either checked or shaded. A checked box indicates that all IIS features are enabled, while a shaded box means that some of the features are enabled. When the installation is finished, close all windows.
- 2). Click "Start" and key "inetmgr" in the Search box, and press "Enter." This opens the Internet Information Services Manager tool.
- 3). Find the level in the tool that you want to manage. This is typically the machine level, which is at the top of the pane. Find "Server Certificates" in the "Machine Features" view, and double-click it.
- 4). Click "Create Certificate Request" in the "Actions" dialog.
- 5). Fill in the information accurately in the "Distinguished Name Properties" dialog and click "Next." Remember, the more accurate the information you provide, the more secure your server and transactions will be.
- 6). Accept the defaults in the "Cryptographic Service Provider Properties" dialog by clicking "Next." This indicates that you are requesting a 1024-bit RSA key, which will determine the certificate's encryption strength.
- 7). Enter a file name for the text file that will be created. Be sure to choose a location that you can find later. Click "Finish."
- 8). Select a certificate vendor and follow his process for sending the CSR, or Certificate Signing Request, to it. You will need to send it the file created in Step 5 so that it can generate your certificate.
