- 1). Sketch out the rough draft for your cartoon character's body and head, making sure both of these sections are proportional to each other. Use the protractor to help you create the circular guidelines of the face area. Draw the limbs and overall body guideline with oval-like images.
- 2). Divide the face of your character into four equal sections to help you create each of the individual facial features. Regardless of what type of cartoon character you have chosen, the face will most likely feature proportional, vertical halves. Carefully create each of these features as they are depicted in the reference picture.
- 3). Add detail to the body and attire of the cartoon character you have selected. Cartoon characters typically feature more elaborate, detailed faces than bodies. Enlarge the head, shrink the legs and feet. Exaggerate features like the nose, mouth and ears. Show emotion. Draw a big toothy smile to show happiness. Draw inverted lips and and a frown with sad eyes to show a dejected character. If you are presenting this caricature to a child, consider a dialogue balloon with a personalized greeting. Build in some foreground and background details to add perspective. Put your fish character near a reef. Put your clown in front of a a circus arena.
- 4). Trace all of the intended pencil lines with an ink pen to create a clean and bold appearance in your drawing. Move the pen over each of the marks carefully, ensuring that you do not accidentally trace over any guidelines you used to create this character or smear any ink during this process. Let the ink dry, then completely erase any remaining guideline marks from the page.
- 5). Use colored pencils or markers to add color to your cartoon character. Colored pencils add for easy fading, while the markers work well if you are just trying to add solid colors. Title, sign and date your work.
