- 1). Put down a large drop cloth or piece of plastic onto a flat surface. You need to set up in an area where there is plenty of room around you.
- 2). Place your canvas or butcher paper on top of the drop cloth. You want enough drop cloth around the edges of the canvas so that when you are painting, the paint won't get all over the surface beneath.
- 3). Use a water-based paint like acrylic or tempera.
- 4). Put the paint onto an artist's palette, paper plates or into disposable cups.
- 5). Dip a paintbrush, toothbrush, sponge or even your hands into the different colors of paint. Drip the paint onto your blank canvas. If you are finding the paint is not dripping well, add water to dilute it. Move your hand around with a full brush of paint in different motions over the canvas to create different patterns.
- 6). Flick the paint onto the canvas. Load a paintbrush or toothbrush with paint and hit it against your hand so the paint splatters onto the canvas.
