- 1). Clean the surface of the garage with a rag, wire brush and dishwashing soap. The wire brush is important to remove paint chips and caked-on dirt. Allow the door time to dry.
- 2). Fill in any cracks in the door using spackling compound. Wood will tend to crack over time, so this step is important to give your door the like-new surface it used to have.
- 3). Sand the door using an electric sander or medium grade sand paper, to remove chipping paint and to smooth the spackling.
- 4). Tape the edges of the windows and door handles with painter's tape. Tape plastic bags over door handles for extra protection.
- 5). Paint on the exterior primer. This is an important step to protecting the wood and will improve the appearance of the finished product. Give the primer the amount of time it needs to dry according to the paint can.
- 6). Paint your chosen paint over the primer. Latex paints are popular for their durability and fast drying time, but oil-based paints are known to penetrate wood well. Be careful not to apply latex paint over a previous coating of oil-based paint. Give the paint time to dry and apply a second coat if necessary.
