- 1). Use a screwdriver to remove handles, knobs and other hardware.
- 2). Wash the furniture with soap and water if necessary to remove dirt and dust that can interfere with the painting process. Let dry.
- 3). Work in a well-ventilated area. Run fans and open windows. Lay newspaper down.
- 4). Using an orbital sander and 80 to 100 grit sandpaper, remove old paint from the nightstand. Switch to 150 grit to remove any rough areas and to smooth out the surface.
- 5). Sand little nooks and crannies that are difficult to reach using your hand with a piece of sandpaper.
- 6). Vacuum sanding dust. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the furniture piece until all the sanding debris is gone. Sanding debris can interfere with paint adhesion. Let dry.
- 7). Apply two thin coats of a water-based primer using a bristled paintbrush. Let primer dry in between coats as recommended by manufacturer.
- 8). Run your hand over the dried primer. Sand the nightstand if you feel any rough areas. Wipe down the nightstand with a damp cloth to remove dust. Let dry.
- 9). Using a bristled paintbrush, paint a thin coat of interior acrylic paint. Paint using long even strokes that cover the length of the nightstand so you get a smooth finish. Apply another thin coat. If necessary, apply a few more coats until you get the look you desire. Let coats of paint dry as recommended by the manufacturer.
