How to: a Fence in Perspective

    • 1). Sketch in the horizon line of your picture. This is a horizontal line going all the way across the page. It can be a plain straight line or it can undulate to show hills; it may even be expressed as a series of lines to show successive hills that graduate into the steeper peaks of mountains.

    • 2). Lightly sketch a guideline for the location of your fence. This line will travel from the starting point of your fence, which may be near or even off the bottom of your page, and will simulate the contours of the you wish to represent. Therefore, it may travel to the top of a hill, then jog to left or right as it reappears going over another hill, or simply not reappear if its end falls below the visible hill-brow.

    • 3). Pencil in vertical lines to use as locations for the fence posts. The posts in the foreground of the picture, conventionally located in the bottom portion of the page or other drawing surface, will be the tallest, widest and most clearly defined with detail. As you draw the posts along the line you drew to define the fence line, make them progressively shorter and closer together.

    • 4). Add boards or wire to the posts after they are sketched in place. These will also become smaller and have less detail as they become farther away from the viewer. The wires or boards will appear to converge as they become more distant.

    • 5). Determine the time of day and the angle of the sun shining across your fence. Shade in shadows stretching away from the fence, opposite the sunlit side. Noonday shadows will be short; scarcely more than a puddle of darker color at the foot of each post. Morning or afternoon shadows will be much longer.
