How to Prevent Outboard Motor Fuel Problems

    • 1). Add a fuel stabilizer to the gasoline. Each product will provide an ounces of stabilizer to gallons of fuel ratio. Develop the habit of adding fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank when purchasing gasoline.

    • 2). When you have finished using the outboard motor, disconnect the fuel supply while the engine is still running. You will be surprised at how long the engine runs on the remaining fuel left in the fuel line and carburetor.

    • 3). As the engine RPMs start to drop, operate the choke mechanism. The engine will rev and produce a smokey exhaust as a richer gasoline mixture is delivered by the choke. Continue to operate the choke mechanism until the engine stalls.

    • 4). You have now drained the remaining fuel from the fuel line and carburetor bowl(s). Any fuel remaining in the system will not leave varnish deposits if you were using the fuel stabilizer.

    • 5). Do not forget to reconnect the fuel line.
