How to Draw a Yarrow Plant

    • 1). Sketch several lines to indicate the ground at about a half inch up from the bottom of your paper.

    • 2). Draw eight to 10 stems to reach a height of six or seven inches up on your paper by four inches wide. Picture a wild-looking unorganized conglomeration of stems that reach up from the ground.

    • 3). Sketch three-inch-wide by one-inch-tall ovals to indicate the position above the stems after you choose where you want to place your flowers. You will erase these guidelines later, so draw them lightly.

    • 4). Draw the centerlines of leaves on your stems at about every quarter inch, varying the placement by jutting the leaves out from each side of the stems. Keep your leaves long, at about two inches.

    • 5). Mark tiny leaf formations about an eighth of an inch long from the centerline of the leaves. The green sided leaf-formations of yarrow leaves stand in rows on either side of the centerline and are fairly uniform in size, growing smaller near the stem and tips of the leaves. Draw about a dozen oval-shaped leaves per side of each centerline.

    • 6). Split the stems in four or five directions to connect them with the outline of the flowers. Draw little branch-like structures about a half-inch long to support the flower heads.

    • 7). Sketch tiny stars of about an eighth of an inch in size inside the ovals above the stems to indicate individual flowers. Curve each of the points of the stars, because the petals of the yarrow are softly rounded. Erase the ovals.

    • 8). Draw tiny circles in the center of each star for the flower head center. Dot each center with seven or eight dots around a tiny center circle.

    • 9). Color or paint your flowerheads white, adding shading to the petals. Color or paint the center of the flowers a light yellow. The leaves should be a grass-green color. Mix some green with yellow to get a sage green for the stems. Darken the sides of the stems to create a round effect, adding dimension to the drawing.
