- 1). Check the classified ads section of your local newspaper. Most classifieds have a specific area for items that are for sale. Keep an eye on this from week to week, particularly in the Sunday edition. If you do not see anything listed, you may wish to consider placing a “Want to Buy” classified ad to let people know that you are in the market for a used outboard motor.
- 2). Check the local bait and tackle shops. Fishermen who own boats frequent these stores. They will often have some form of informal bulletin board where customers can pin up advertisement about boats, trailers and other fishing gear for sale. Check the bulletin boards in area bait shops to see if anyone has a used outboard motor for sale. You may also want to consider posting your own advertisement.
- 3). Look at bulletin boards in the local grocery store. Many grocery stores will have a bulletin board either near the entrance or the manager’s office for local residents to post short ads. Check this bulletin board to see if anyone has a used outboard motor for sale. If not, post your own ad to see if someone will contact you with an offer.
- 4). Search the Internet. More specifically, search Craigslist.org. This site features classified advertisements, much like a newspaper, for pretty much every local area in North America. Go to the Craigslist page for your town and scan the ads. If you’re lucky, someone may have posted an ad saying that they are selling an outboard motor. If not, you can also post a free ad to let people know that you are looking for an outboard motor (see Resources below).
- 5). Ask around. You may not directly know someone who has a used outboard motor for sale, but chances are that you know someone who knows someone.
