How to Diagnose Excessive Oil Consumption

    • 1). A good place to start is to check for a loose oil drain plug, sometimes whomever changed the oil last could have become distracted for whatever reason and may not have tightened your drain plug to correct torque.

    • 2). Check front of engine for oil spots you could possibly have a worn front cover gasket or loose or damaged front cover bolts.

    • 3). Check around valve cover for traces of oil, worn valve cover gasket or possibly loose valve cover bolts can eventually contribute to a noticeable loss of oil.

    • 4). Check around oil filter, filter may be loose or may not have been changed in a while.

    • 5). Check for loose oil pressure switch

    • 6). You could have excessively worn pistons, piston rings or cylinders. If piston rings are not installed correctly or worn they can cause an thicker oil film on cylinder walls causing you to lose oil to combustion.

    • 7). Check your PCV valve, a faulty or worn PCV can cause excessive crankcase airflow.
