How to Run a Checksum

    Download and Install Bitser

    • 1). Open your Internet browser. Browse to Bitser.org and click on the downloads link. Download the most recent version of the Bitser program and save it to your desktop.

    • 2). Find the downloaded file on your desktop. Open the file, and run the "setup.exe" within.

    • 3). Follow the prompts during installation. When asked if you want to add Bitser to the Windows Explorer context menu, check the box and continue the installation.

    Using Bitser

    • 1). Browse back to your desktop and right-click on the downloaded file. Select Bitser from the menu that pops up.

    • 2). Hold your mouse over the "Checksums" portion of the menu. Click "Calculate All."

    • 3). Compare the checksums you've created with the ones listed on the Bitser Web page, next to the download. This process is the same for checking any file; just use that file's checksum from its own Web page.

Downloading and Using MD5 Check Utility

    • 1). Browse to the CNET download link, included in the Resources section below. Download the program to your desktop and extract it there.

    • 2). Double-click on the extracted file named "MD5" to open the program.

    • 3). Copy the MD5 value you expect from the file's website into the field labeled "Please Paste In The MD5 Code."

    • 4). Click the "Browse" button and locate your file you need to test. If the file's MD5 code matches, the program will tell you so and the field with the program's MD5 will be highlighted in green. If the codes don't match, the field will be highlighted orange, and you will get a warning.

    Downloading and Using MD5sums

    • 1). Browse to the PC-Tools download link included in the Resources section. Download the MD5sums program from that page.

    • 2). Open the zipped folder and extract the MD5sums program to your desktop.

    • 3). Place any file you wish to check on your desktop and drag and drop the file onto the MD5sums program. The checksum will be displayed in a command prompt window.

    • 4). Compare the resulting checksum against the official checksum from the file's website.
