How to Fix the Brakes on a Ford Focus

    • 1). Detach the battery cable and break the lug nuts on the front wheels. Raise your Ford Focus with a jack and place it on jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and the wheels and chock the rear wheels. Allow air to escape from the brake fluid reservoir by opening it before proceeding.

    • 2). Remove the old caliper by unscrewing the bolts with an Allen wrench and taking the caliper off of the rotor. Take the damaged or worn brake pads off of the caliper by pulling the holding clips off with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Remove the brake line clip from the strut and detach the brake line from the caliper. Smear brake pad grease onto the back of the new brake pads and insert the replacement brake pads into the new caliper. Reverse the process to reinstall the calipers.

    • 3). Spray aerosol brake cleaner onto the rotor to clean it if there is no damage or extreme wear. Replace a damaged or worn rotor, or take it to a professional mechanic to have the rotor turned. Pull the rotor straight toward you to take it off of the lug nuts. If it doesn't come right off, tap it from the back with a rubber mallet. To reinstall the rotor or put a new one on your Focus, mount it onto the lug nuts and push it into place firmly.

    • 4). Mount the wheel back onto the Focus and tighten the lug nuts. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts once the Focus is on the ground. Pump the brakes once or twice to seat them. Repeat the process to repair or replace the rotor, caliper or brake pads on the other side.
