- 1). Open the SQL Profiler software from the link in the Windows program menu. Log in to the server on which you want to run the trace.
- 2). Click the "File" menu item and select "Open." Double-click the trace you want to use to watch the SQL Server. After you choose a trace, Profiler lists all the queries that run against the server. You can click any one of the columns to sort the information.
- 3). Click the column named "Start Time." The data sorts according to the start time when the user runs the query. Next to this column is the "Stop Time." If the query takes longer than two seconds to run, consider tweaking the query to speed up the service.
- 4). Click the "CPU" column. This column shows the percentage of CPU usage for each query. If the CPU usage spikes to 80 or 90 percent, the query takes too much of your server's resources and it must be tweaked for better performance.
