- 1). Make sure your external hard drive is properly connected to your computer. Use the included USB or FireWire cable (whichever is applicable) to connect the drive to your computer.
- 2). Click twice on the "My Computer" or "Computer" icon on your desktop. If there is no desktop icon, click "Start" and "My Computer" or "Computer."
- 3). Right-click on the icon for your external hard drive.
- 4). Click "Format."
- 5). Select "FAT32" from the drop-down "File Type" menu.
- 6). Click "Start." Windows will begin formatting your external hard drive. During this process all data on the drive will be erased and it will be reformatting in the FAT32 file system.
