- Latex, enamel and oil-based exterior paints are water-repellent and designed to last through several seasons of storms. Penetrating stain also forms a water-resistant surface when properly applied. Some exterior paints are custom-formulated for particular climate conditions. Latex paint is lower in polluting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than oil-based paint.
- Masonry paint is used on stucco, concrete and cement and is latex or acrylic-based. Oil-based paints do not work well on masonry surfaces. A coat of masonry paint can help waterproof a leaky basement if the surface is properly prepared; some situations call for priming with specialized sealants. If you're painting a concrete floor or deck, make sure you choose an enamel paint recommended for floors; they're manufactured to stand up to more wear and repeated washing.
- For surfaces that will be frequently or constantly soaked, you may want to consider using marine paint, also described as coating or sealant. Marine paints are popular for use on metal surfaces and can form a protective layer that retards rust and corrosion.
- If you're painting a wooden surface, you may want to consider finishing products such as varnish and lacquer. These mixtures of resin and solvent can be applied to raw wood or over wax, oil or stain to add durability and gloss, and dry to a hard surface a the solvents evaporate. Applying varnish or lacquer is a more challenging process than applying paint; you'll want to read up or get some professional advice.
