- 1). Scrub away the rust with a coarse steel pad or steel wool, using a firm circular motion. When scrubbing the rust off initially, you'll need to be firm, but only firm enough to allow the loose rust to flake off. After brushing away the rust flakes, put masking tape around the rusted area.
- 2). Mist the area with water or lubricant spray, then apply a low-acidity rust remover to the rusted area and allow this light paste to sit for about 15 minutes.
- 3). Buff away the rust remover lightly with steel wool to remove the remaining rust. This can be done with a finer steel wool, which is gentler on the paint job. If you have to buff harder than you're comfortable with, you can reapply the rust remover and allow it to sit longer before buffing the rust away. Rinse the area, then wipe dry with a soft cloth or shop towels.
