How to Remove the Battery Cable on an Astro Van

    • 1). Open the Astro's hood. Lift the prop rod to support the hood while you work. Locate the battery in the front of the driver's side area of the engine compartment.

    • 2). Remove the negative battery cable from the battery terminal with a wrench. Remove the positive cable from the battery terminal with the wrench.

    • 3). Follow the negative cable to the opposite end, mounted to the engine block or an attachment point on the van's frame. Remove the bolt securing the cable with the wrench. Attach the new negative cable to the block or frame and tighten the bolt with the wrench.

    • 4). Trace the positive battery cable to the mounting area on the starter. Remove the nut securing the cable on the post of the starter with the wrench. Slide the cable off the post. Place the new cable on the post and secure it with the retaining nut. Tighten the nut with the wrench.

    • 5). Attach the positive cable to the battery terminal. Tighten the cable with the wrench. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten it with the wrench.
