- The HP dc5000 is a small-form-factor desktop computer. Small-form-factor means that all of the computer's components are fitted into a case that is designed to take up a small area of your desk. The dc5000 comes with a number of memory and processor options and a choice of hard-drive capacities. You can also choose from one of three operating systems, all supplied with the dc5000, including Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home, and Mandrake Linux version 9.2.
- The HP dc5000 small-form-factor computer comes with a choice of processors. You can choose from the Intel Celeron 2.6 GHz (gigahertz) processor or the Intel Celeron 3.4 GHz processor. The 3.4 GHz Celeron processor utilizes Intel's HyperThread technology, which means that the processor can handle multiple calculations simultaneously. This makes processing times quicker if you are running multiple programs simultaneously. The processor makes use of an integrated L2 (layer 2) cache, meaning that data used in a calculation is stored in the cache and does not have to be retrieved from RAM (random access memory) when the processor next needs it, speeding up the time taken to perform calculations.
- The Intel 865 GV Chipset motherboard, which hosts the computer's internal components, contains four DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Module) slots, so that the computer can be fitted with four RAM memory chips. The minimum amount of RAM that the computer is supplied with is 128MB (megabytes), but it can support up to 4GB (gigabytes) of RAM.
- The dc5000 stands 3.95 inches high and has a width of 13.3 inches. The depth of the computer, from front to back, is 15.1 inches. You can stand the dc5000 on its side by using a stand that is supplied with the computer. When it is placed on the stand, its dimensions become 14.4 inches high by 3.95 inches wide by 15.1 inches deep.
- You can attach external devices, such as external hard disk drives, to the dc5000 using ports that are built into the computer. Two PS/2 ports are available for you to plug in a PS/2 mouse and a PS/2 keyboard. If you need to connect USB (Universal Serial Bus) devices to the computer, six USB version 2.0 input connectors are available. A VGA port allows you to connect a second monitor. There are also two mini-jack ports, one allowing you to attach a microphone to the computer, and the other allowing you to plug in speakers or headphones to listen to audio output.
- A 185-watt PSU (Power Supply Unit) is fitted inside the case to deliver power to the computer components. The PSU takes power from a mains power source and can accept 100-volt to 240-volt mains power input.
- A 48x CD ROM (Read Only Memory) drive comes fitted to the dc5000 as standard, but you can choose to upgrade this to CD and DVD writer drives, including an 8x DVD+R/RW drive, which can read DVD and also burn data to blank DVDs.
