It's an argument that's been around since Kung Fu movies and Anime started to become popular.
Subtitles or Voice over Dubbing, which is better? Some people don't care, and others will get quite heated over the issue.
Let us look at Subtitles first.
Subtitles allow for more accurate translations, and since you are hearing the original voice actor, the emotions are more likely to be conveyed properly.
On the downside, you must split your focus between reading the subtitles and watching whats going on.
That can be a challenge for even the best readers till you get used to it, for anyone that doesn't read well, it's going to be a problem.
Now lets look at Dubbing.
For starters the fact that you are hearing the dialog in your language is helpful.
Another good point is you can let yourself get into the story more, because you don't need to split your focus.
The problems with dubbing, are that the translators don't always do a proper job.
There is also sometimes a problem of finding the right voice over actors to do the job.
Time is also an issue.
A subtitled version of a show can be available in very little time, while dubbed versions typically are made by a particular company, and can take anywhere from months to years to be released after the original show aired.
I personally prefer Subtitles.
It took me awhile to get used to them, but; as long as the people doing the translation are good, they give a quicker and better experience.
However I will watch some shows dubbed, simply because I liked the voice over actors that made them.
Cowboy bebop is a perfect example.
I saw the show on Cartoon Network and got used to that version before I saw the subtitled version, and I never got used to the different voices.
On the other hand, I got into the subtitled version of Naruto first and can't stand the Dubbed version.
At the end of the day, it's a matter of taste.
I really think it's time to put this argument to rest and just enjoy the shows.
Why fight over it?
